FIREWORKS CAN BE TERRIFYING TO PETS
PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS AND CATS SAFE OVER THE JULY 4TH HOLIDAY

Sonoma County, CA – Fireworks are a July 4th tradition. But the display that humans experience as beautiful can terrify pets to the extent of panic. Each year during the week of July 4th holiday, many pets -- mostly dogs -- escape yards or break loose as a reaction to the loud noise of fireworks. In extreme cases, pets can break through windows and doors causing extensive injuries and damage. A majority of these pets end up at animal shelters or are injured as they run away; sometimes pets run into roadways and are hit and killed by vehicles.

Sonoma County Animal Care and Control reminds you that fireworks take place throughout the holiday week (see attached list of fireworks events in Sonoma County). Please take the following steps to protect your pets:

Keep your pet indoors during fireworks, preferably in a crate in a quiet, cool room. White noise (like fans, radio, television) can help drown out the noise of fireworks.  If a pet is extremely nervous consult your veterinarian about possibly giving a tranquilizer.

Make sure your pet is wearing identification and is microchipped so if he or she does get loose you will be more likely to be reunited quickly. Being able to identify you and your pet helps animal shelters, veterinarians, law enforcement, and good samaritans get your pet back to you as soon as possible.

If you are leaving town, do not leave your pet alone. Be sure to arrange for a pet sitter, and leave detailed instructions on how to secure and protect your pet. Consider leaving very nervous pets at a boarding kennel.

Be sure your pet sitter has written permission, signed and dated, from you that allows them to redeem your pet from a shelter and/or if necessary authorize medical treatment.

If your pet goes missing, please check local animal shelters. Start with the shelter in your jurisdiction. If you don’t find your pet there, remember that your pet might be at another shelter. (A list of local shelters is attached.)

Sonoma County Animal Care and Control is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon - 5:30 p.m. Its mission is to protect the health and safety of people and animals; investigate and prosecute animal cruelty, abuse and neglect cases; educate the public about responsible domestic animal ownership; reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs; provide a safe environment for animals in need; and place adoptable animals into caring homes. Sonoma County Animal Care and Control enforces local, state, and federal laws pertaining to animals, and operates a full service animal shelter serving more than 6,000 animals annually.
