cerebros infantiles estimulados:

AN EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINING SUMMER FOR OUR CHILDREN!

By Christina Sánchez, PSYd student in Clinical Psychology & Marisol Muñoz-Kiehne, PhD

As the end of the school year approaches, many parents are planning activities to keep their children occupied and happy this summer. With so much excitement that summer vacations tend to bring, it is important to ensure that our children keep learning inside and outside of our homes.

Raising children who enjoy learning does not happen by accident. Education experts recommend that children keep studying during the summer so that they do not forget what they learned during the school year. Learning during the summer will prevent the loss of knowledge and skills, and will keep children sharp and ready to apply themselves the next school year. Here are a few suggestions to keep our children’s brains stimulated:

•  It is important to keep a daily routine. Together you can prepare a summer schedule that includes wake-up time, activities during the day, and bedtime. This way, parents and children together decide what to do, and children learn that vacations do not mean sleeping all day.

•  Keep books around your children and encourage them to read for fun every day.

•  Learn to love your local library and librarian, and find out about their summer programs. For example, Pickleweed library in San Rafael will offer children’s programs from June 14 until August 9, 2013.

•  If your children had academic difficulties this school year, ask their teachers for homework, books or workbooks for the summer, and review them with your children.

•  Motivate your children to complete at least 5 to 10 math problems three times a week.

·•  Make the activities fun! We do not want children to feel that they are being punished.

Since recreation and relaxation are equally important, think about what your children could enjoy based on their interests.

•  If you want to plan something fun and close to home, plan a picnic that can include: a simple breakfast, games outside, a light lunch, water gun fights, or watch a movie at home or at the movie theater.

•  Downtown farmers’ market- Take a walk with your children while you all listen to music and purchase fruits and vegetables. In Marin they are every Thursday on Fourth Street, 6-9 PM.

Summertime is a good time to think about how to keep our children’s minds and bodies active. Keep it simple, fun and stimulating!
