Jim Davis plays his old friend, the Sebastopol Steinway

SEBASTOPOL, CALIFORNIA. Hace alrededor de 50 años, James Davis era un jovencito granjero de la localidad que había elegido como su pasión el tocar el piano. Posteriormente Davis se enteró de la existencia de un hermoso piano Steinway del año de 1927 que se encontraba en el recién construido Centro de los Veteranos de Sebastopol. Durante los domingos por la tarde, un amable conserje le permitía a Jim el tocar el piano mientras se dedicaba a limpiar el lugar (la experiencia de Jim se limitaba tan sólo a amigos hasta entonces).
Jim se fue a la Universidad para estudiar piano y dedicó su vida a toda clase de actividades relativas a los pianos. Jim los tocaba, los compraba y los venía, los reparaba y los afinaba. Actualmente los pianos que ocupan un espacio en el Redwood Empire le deben su resonancia sonora a los talentos de Davis.
Recientemente el Salón de los Veteranos fue alquilado al Centro par a las Artes de Sebastopol. Se le pidió a Jim si podía revisar un viejo y olvidado piano Steinway ubicado en una esquina tras bambalinas y cubierto de telas y latas de pintura vieja y seca ¿Acaso Jim pudo traer ese piano de nuevo a la vida? …James Davis reconoció en forma instantánea a su viejo amigo.
Después de meses de que Jim y su hijo Greg realizaran un arduo trabajo, finalmente lograron que el Steinway luciera y sonara tal como el primer día que lo tocara en la década de 1960. La noche del pasado sábado 4 de mayo Jim presentó un concierto para el que todos los boletos fueron vendidos en el Centro para las Artes de Sebastopol. La mayoría de las piezas musicales que interpretó fueron obras originales inspiradas en su vida en el condado de Sonoma. Gracias a James Davis, éste no será el último de los conciertos que escucharemos de ese viejo piano Steinway de Sebastopol.

SEBASTOPOL, CALIFORNIA. Fifty or so years ago, James Davis was a local farm kid who’d picked up a passion for the piano. He found out about the 1927 Steinway grand piano over at the newly built Sebastopol Vets Center. On Sunday afternoons a kindly janitor would let young Jim in to play on it while he cleaned up the place. (Jim’s playing experience was limited to funky old uprights up until then.)
Jim went on to study piano in college and dedicated his life to all things related to pianos. He played them, bought and sold them, repaired them and tuned them. Pianos today throughout the Redwood Empire owe their sonorant resonance to the talents of Davis.
Recently the Vet’s Hall was leased to the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. He was asked to take a look at a badly battered, neglected and forgotten old Steinway stuck in a corner backstage under a drop cloth and cans of dried up paint. Could he bring it back to life?….James Davis instantly recognized his old friend.
After months of hard work by Jim and his son Greg, they had the Steinway looking and performing like the day he first played it back in the 1960’s. On Saturday night on May 4th he gave a sold out concert on the old piano at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Most of his pieces were original works inspired by his life in Sonoma County. Thanks to James Davis, this is not the last we’ll be hearing from that old Steinway from Sebastopol.
